Max

I eye my reflection in the mirror, shaking my head at the ridiculous smile on my face. Everyone I meet today is going to think I’m on drugs if I can’t wipe this goofy expression off my face, but I can’t bring myself to care. It’s been several days now since I took Shay out to dinner, and then feasted in an entirely different way. I wish I’d been able to repeat the experience, but the closer we get to the day of the gala, the more and more details turn up needing attention, and I’m well aware of how exhausted Shay was the day after I took her virginity. She covered it well, but I know her by now, and I know when she’s not at her best.

I’m still in awe of her trust in me, and I refuse to cheapen her first experience by insisting on it again and again when she clearly needs her rest. Besides, she’s holding up her end of the bargain like a champ. She’s working even harder, as though trying to convince both of us that she was never in this job to score a man, as though I need convincing of that.

She’s as honest as the day is long, and that’s only one of the many things I appreciate about her. She’s the best assistant I’ve ever had, somehow managing to field most of my phone calls as well as dealing with the gala. She’s also the sweetest, smartest, sexiest woman I’ve ever met.

At this point, I realize I’ve been standing here, staring into space, daydreaming about Shay instead of tying my tie. I pull it apart and start again, forcing myself to focus until the job is done. I’m just looking forward to the gala being over so that I can take her out on a proper date. For all the time we’ve been spending together, we’ve only been on one date, and I intend to wine and dine her to the extreme, take her all the places she’s always wanted to go. I won’t let her down the way her father did.

Most of all, I’m looking forward to taking her out, and then keeping her in the whole of the next day, naked and sated in my bed.

My phone rings, yanking me out of a sweet and very hot memory, and I snatch it up and stab at the screen.

“What?” I snarl. All I have of Shay’s body right now are memories. I don’t appreciate having them interrupted.

“Max, buddy, you need to switch to decaf. It’s too early for you to be this uptight.”

I sigh. Of course, it would be Leo, one of my oldest friends, calling me up at stupid o’clock on a Wednesday morning. “What do you want, slacker?”

“A woman, a beer, and a king-size bed, not in that order. Anyway, who are you calling slacker? I hear you’re running around town organizing a party instead of doing your work.”

I snort. “This from the man who literally spends his life going to parties.
